Due to the different sources and production processes, there are great differences in chemical structure, morphological characteristics and physical and chemical properties of various carbon materials. According to their physical state, they can be divided into solid raw materials (i.e. aggregates) and liquid raw materials (i.e. binders and impregnants). Due to the different functions and application range of various raw materials, there are different quality requirements for them.

 

Petroleum coke is a kind of solid product obtained by coking various petroleum residue, petroleum pitch or heavy oil. The main element is carbon, the ash content is very low, generally less than 0.5%; its appearance is black or dark gray honeycomb structure, and the pores in the coke block are mostly oval through empty. Petroleum coke is easy to graphitize. Compared with metallurgical coke, the stacking of flakes on the carbon mesh layer is more regular and the distance between flakes is smaller; after high temperature treatment of graphitization, the lattice arrangement of flakes on carbon mesh layer is close to that of natural graphite, Petroleum coke is a kind of solid product obtained by coking various petroleum residue, petroleum pitch or heavy oil. It is mainly used in aluminum smelting and metallurgical carbon industry.

 

Pitch coke is a kind of high-quality raw material with high carbon content, good mechanical strength, low ash and low sulfur. Its structure density and mechanical strength are better than those of petroleum coke, and the ash and boron contents are slightly higher than those of petroleum coke. It is also a kind of graphitized carbon, but its graphitization performance is worse than that of petroleum coke. It belongs to less ash raw material, in the production of carbon is mainly to use its good mechanical strength to improve the mechanical properties of products. For example, in order to improve the mechanical strength of graphite electrodes, pitch coke with 20% - 25% endosperm is generally used in solid raw materials. When using pot furnace to calcine delayed petroleum coke with high volatile content, adding part of asphalt coke can alleviate coke blockage. However, after adding pitch coke, the graphite electrode produced has higher resistivity and larger linear expansion coefficient. In addition, pitch coke can also be used to produce anode paste, prebaked anode, electric carbon products and blast furnace carbon block.
